Critical Assessment of Hybrid RANS-LES Modeling for Attached and Separated Flows

چکیده
The objective of this study is to evaluate a recently proposed dynamic hybrid Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework that seeks to effectively address issues regarding RANS-to-LES transition and explicit grid dependence inherent in most current hybrid RANS-LES (HRL) models. RANSto-LES transition in the investigated dynamic HRL (DHRL) model is based on the physical concept of maintaining continuity of total turbulence production using two rigorously separated turbulent stress parameters, where one is obtained from the RANS model and the other from the LES model. Computations of two canonical test cases —two-dimensional turbulent channel flow and backward facing step flow—were performed to assess the potential of the DHRL model for predicting both attached and separated turbulent flows. This investigation attempts to evaluate the ability of the DHRL method to reproduce the detailed physics of attached and separated turbulent flows, as well as to resolve the issues concerning log-layer mismatch and delayed break down of separated shear layers. The DHRL model simulation results are compared with experimental and DNS data, along with the computational results for other HRL and RANS models. In summary, these comparisons demonstrate that the DHRL framework does address many of the weaknesses inherent in most current HRL models.

Des, Hybrid Rans/les and Pans Models for Unsteady Separated Turbulent Flow Simulations
This paper presents computational results for two DES (Detached Eddy Simulation), one hybrid RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)/ LES (Large Eddy Simulation) and some preliminary results from PANS (Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes) turbulence for simulation of unsteady separated turbulent flows. The models are implemented in a full 3-D Navier Stokes solver and are based on the twoequation k-...

ven with great advances in computational techniques and computing power during recent decades, the modeling of unsteady separated flows, such as those encountered in the wake of a re-entry vehicle, continues to be one of the most challenging problems in CFD. Of most interest to the aerothermodynamics community is accurately predicting transient heating loads on the base of a blunt body, which w...
متن کاملA Dual -‐ Mesh Framework for Turbulence Modeling : Application to Flow Around a Circular Cylinder
To overcome this difficulty, various hybrid LES/RANS approaches have been developed, where RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations are solved in the near-wall region while LES is only conducted in the free-shear region away from the wall [Fröhlich and von Terzi 2008]. One of the methods to address this issue is a consistent framework for turbulence modeling, where the filtered and Reyn...
متن کاملA unified RANS-LES model: Computational development, accuracy and cost
5 Large eddy simulation (LES) is computationally extremely expensive for the investigation of wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers. A way to reduce the computational cost of LES by orders of magnitude is to combine LES equations with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations used in the near-wall region. A large variety of such hybrid RANS-LES methods are currently in us...

We study a new hybrid RANS/Variational Multiscale LES (VMS-LES) model for bluff body flows. The simulations have been carried out using a parallelized solver, based on a mixed element/volume formulation on unstructured grids. First, the behavior of a VMS-LES model with different subgrid scale models is investigated for the flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number Re =3900. Second, a new...
